After the previous Food Truck Rally, I felt compelled to reach out to everyone who continues to support us! Let me start by saying that it was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G to see so many people come to the rally despite the cold and dark weather. It meant a lot to us that there were so many Food Truck Rally supporters both new and return. We have come so far since we first started, and I feel that it is finally time to give everyone a little peek into how RiceWorks began.
RiceWorks goes way back… It actually, has only been 'RiceWorks' for a little over a year now. Some find it hard to believe, but the truck has been in the family for over 10 years! My father had started it all, and originally dubbed the truck 'Oriental Cuisine'.
This journey began when my father purchased a 1978 Ore-Ida bread truck (yes it really isn’t a UPS delivery truck, although that would be nice) and spent hours upon hours of his time building this mobile kitchen using top-notch restaurant equipment. He literally built the whole business from ground up all the while pursuing a career at Micron. For years, I remember catering private parties, making deliveries, and even helping my father sling egg rolls on the weekends. Although the truck was just a hobby for my father, he had to put it on hold a few years back due to becoming ill.
I lost my father to colon cancer earlier this year. He was a great man, with unsurpassed love and respect for everything in life. He also loved every aspect of being a chef. When he was teaching me the ropes to the food business, he had always said to me “cook with love.” The point he made to me was that if I did not “cook with love,” I could not ever enjoy being a chef, and I would not serve good food. At the time, I thought this was a very cheesy statement. But as I got more and more involved in the food industry, I truly gained more respect as to how those words of wisdom truly apply to every aspect of this job and lifestyle.
There is so much more to tell, but to keep everyone on their toes I will have to save the rest for future posts!
